Still Life (in progress - UPDATED)

UPDATE:  here's what I've done since last week. The sunglasses are still rough, and the edges definitely need to be refined but all I have left to fill in is the glass...which I'm totally avoiding. But I'll get it done.

As you can see, it's far from being done. This is my first time seriously working in charcoal, so it's been taking me awhile and it's been super experimental. I'm really happy about how it looks now, though. The perfume bottle bothered me for the longest time because it's out of focus in the reference photo I took, but I think it works that way. I'll post more photos as I complete the piece.

Also I just noticed that the "a" on the Nutella looks a little small and it's really bothering me so I'm going to go fix that now...

edit: here's the picture i'm using for reference, just to compare

  2. Holly tap-dancing hamsters Alegra!!! this is amazing! I really like the clean lines and your reflections in the objects are spot on. If you keep doing the piece this way it's going to turn out to be spectacular! Robert has a point though. The Nutella jar and the glass bottle on the phone don't feel quite round enough. If you could add some shadow in there it would be perfect! Keep up the good work!

  3. OH MAH SWEET JESUS. Nice job so far! The glass looks amazing, and as does the drink cup so far.

The only thing that I noticed, as Robert and Lyndsay pointed out are the jars. Other than that, it looks awesome!

  4. Evil, Allegra, evil. It is really good so far. The part that looks the best in my opinion is the iPhone and the shadows/reflections around it. It looks like you are addressing the majority of the space but that one corner. Maybe make it more like a gradient of darks and lights. This is a really good picture and i hope that your quality stays consistent, if that makes sense.

  5. Allegra: this is awesome! Like everyone else already said, the iphone is amazingly well-rendered, light, shadow, and all that. If you can put that much time and effort into the rest of it the finished piece will be superb. The shadows and reflection on the top of the Starbucks cup are really good too. I am really impressed that this is the first time you're using charcoal - you already look like a pro. Keep up the great work!

  6. Thanks so much everyone :) I appreciate all the feedback! I'll work on rounding out the Nutella jar, but I've edited the post to include the original picture and as you can see it isn't very round in the original. I'll see what I can do. And thank you, Neil, for the suggestion of how to address the corner :)

  7. I love your phone in this piece....It looks so crystal-ish and realistic! I like the highlights in this piece too :) For the nutella jar....I think it would look more 3D if you make the dark parts darker! :)keep on your greeeeeeeat work <3

  9. I really love it. I like the starbucks cup lid (reflection is really good) and the glossy iphone screen!! The shape of the perfume? (the object on the right) looks a little bit wrong, but overall u did a really good job!
